ON ONE ETHNOGRAPHIC PECULIARITY OF OSSETIAN HIGHLAND TWALGOM COMMUNITY

Salbiyev T.K.

In the article one of the elements of the wedding feast characteristic of Ossetian Highland Twalgom community undergoes a mythological interpretation. The two-, three and fourfold toasts proclaimed by the end of the wedding ceremonial feast are considered to be the reflection of Twins myth, personified in the cult of Ossetian patron of prosperity and abundance Mykalgabyrty. One can assume that originally this twin pair was treated as androgynous and can be traced back to Ossetian epic couple of Wyryzmag and Shatana. Later on it was transformed into classic pair of twin brothers, also well known both in Ossetian epic (e. g. Akhshar and Akhshartag, Wyryzhmag and Khamyts) and religious traditions (e. g. Falvara). The relation this cult has to the temples of Mykalgabyrty in the North and in the South of Ossetia, seems to testifies for its royal nature.
